Mythical

In 1650, Bishop James Ussher of Armagh produced a “Chronology of the Bible.” Using the book as his only source, he worked out the genealogy of the Kings of Israel and Judah. These are reproduced here because there is a link (taken with a large pinch of salt, admittedly!) with what follows.

Adam to King David:

– ADAM — SETH — ENOSH — KENAN — MAHABEEL — JARED — ENOCH — METHUSELAH — LAMECH — NOAH — SHEM — ARPHAXAD — SHELAH — EBER — PELEG — REU — SERUG — NAHOR — TERAH — ABRAHAM — ISAAC — JACOB — JUDAH — PHAREZ — HEZRON — RAM — AMMINADAB — NAHSHON — SALMA — BOAZ — OBED — JESSE — DAVID

King David to Zedekiah:

– DAVID — SOLOMON — REHOBOAM — ABIJAH — ASA — JEHOSEPHAT — JEHORAM — AHAZIAH — JOASH — AMAZIAH — UZZIAH — JOTHAM — AHAZ — HEZEKIAH — MANASSEH — AMON — JOSIAH — ZEDEKIAH (d.598 BCE)

Before the fall of Judah and the exile of the Jews, King Zedekiah’s daughter, Tamar, had escaped, and in 586 BCE she married EOCHAID I, High King of Ireland.

When Ussher’s book was published most of the royal houses of Europe made efforts to trace their ancestry back to this Irish High King and so to King David and thus, back to Adam. As a result, a number of legendary pedigrees came into being.(see next section).
