I was born in San Francisco, California but I currently reside in Dearborn, Michigan. My Great Grandfather arrived in the San Francisco, CA. USA in 1886 after fleeing from Ireland. His family was from County Sligo. He became one of the Supervisors for the City of San Francisco and helped raise funds for DeVelera. James O’Dowd was my second cousin — James was the youngest Catholic Bishop in the Church and was recognized as forward thinking educator. |

I am a Dowd (and family genealogist) through my mother, Norma Dowd. Her great grandfather, Thomas Dowd, was born abt 1832 in Ireland. He lived in Canada with wife Bridget (Mannion). His first son named John, was born in St Thomas, Ontario in 1859. Thomas moved his growing family to Grand Rapids, Michigan abt 1867. John Dowd then married Johanna Sullivan in 1885. So as you can see, despite my Dutch last name, I have Irish blood in these veins! |
